CHAPTER 8

After such a long day, Huck was happy to sit in a lean-to all snuggled up with Lorne and Saber. It was one of several structures outside of an enormous cave serving as the main hub of the Bigfoot community in the area—and it was smack in the middle of the reserve. Huck’s mind was totally blown by so much new information, like the fact that Ramsey was mated to a Bigfoot named Till, and everyone in Baker knew all about Bigfoot. Well, everyone who wasn’t part of the rangers or law enforcement, with the exception of Vaughn who was newly involved with a Bigfoot named Heptus.

And that poacher? Totally did shoot at a Bigfoot, the bastard. Her name was Pria and she’d fallen down the cliff just like Vaughn had. Huck understood why Vaughn had lied, of course, but jeez why had Ramsey even invited Is It Out There? to come there?

“They thought you lot,” Saber said, “wouldn’t find anything, and then everyone would leave them alone again.”

Huck groaned at the ceiling. “We’re literally making sure we find just enough to keep people watching. Someone actually stopped at a dog groomer to get a bag of fur so they could sprinkle it around for me to ‘discover,’” he said with air quotes as he flopped back against Lorne. “They’re going to make it so I say something like ‘it’s entirely possible Bigfoot is in this reserve’. How am I supposed to protect everyone with shit like that happening?”

He felt Lorne shrug behind him as Saber patted Huck’s knee. Neither of them offered a solution, but Huck wasn’t really expecting them to have one.

Huck sighed. “Really, the only thing that would shut us down is if I quit.”

Lorne stiffened behind him, and Huck looked up to see Saber staring over his head, no doubt right at Lorne. The firelight from outside was just enough to let Huck see Saber’s expression was bordering on something hopeful and desperate.

Huck sat up and turned around so he could see both of them. “What’s going on?”

Lorne looked a bit guilty as he said, “We know being with us isn’t easy, but now that we’re aware of the reserve being here to protect us and just how many humans in Baker are mated to people like us…” He shared a worried look with Saber. “Well, it’s a lot easier for all of us to live together…here.”

“Honestly and in the open,” Saber added.

“You want me to quit,” Huck realized aloud. “Quit and move here.”

Saber sighed and gently took Huck’s hand. “We don’t want to stifle or change you, but we hate it every time you have to leave us.”

Huck hadn’t realized they’d missed him as much as he’d missed them. He’d thought that because they had each other, it might be a little easier for them. Knowing they felt like he did helped him admit his own feelings out loud.

“I hate leaving, too,” Huck whispered with a nod. “I’ve never in my life been as happy as I am when I’m with the two of you.
